Daniel Farke is weighing up the scrap between Remi Matthews and Michael McGovern to become Norwich City's number one - but the head coach is not ruling out a late foray into the market.

Angus Gunn's departure has left a big vacancy and Farke admits it is vital City go into the new Championship season with an assured last line of defence.

'In general, you can say you need a really outstanding goalkeeper to be successful,' he said.

'You can be very happy with your squad but without this element you have no chance to be successful.

'That is the same in each and every league and competition.

'It is quite important. Look at the facts last season. Michael McGovern was our number two. Remi Matthews was our number three and for that we decided to send him on loan to get some minutes and our number one Angus Gunn has left.

'It is quite obvious we don't fall asleep in the market because we have lost a goalkeeper but it is also a situation that doesn't concern me.

'We decided to have a bit of competition between Remi and Michael.

'There have been some good games but also some mistakes. I am pleased with their attitude, they are both working hard. I trust them both and I would have no problem if one of them would be between the posts when the real stuff starts.

'I trust my keepers but without any pressure we can watch the market.

'Let's see how it develops.'

City's targeted approach to transfer business in and out this summer now allows Farke and sporting director Stuart Webber to react should the right option becomes available.

'Listen, we all know if we did not have these transfers out of the club earlier in the summer how difficult it would have been. That was the situation,' said Farke. 'It wasn't a case we could maybe hang onto those players or try to get the price even higher.

'It was a tough situation and I feel Stuart has done a brilliant job.

'It is also really important we have brought new lads in early so we can create that togetherness. The training camp was important for that. We know all the business is not done but we can now work on some small details.

'I have spoken about the size of the squad and why we sent Yanic (Wildschut) on loan, or if we get an offer for another player and what we might want to do then.'
