The future is bright for Alex Neil after Norwich City's youth brigade tore Coventry City to shreds on Tuesday night in a 6-1 EFL Cup rout.

Sergi Canos scored a brace with Jacob Murphy and Ben Godfrey also on target in a power-packed display from Neil's shadow squad who cruised through to the third round.

'It is great to see the young boys coming through,' said Neil. 'One or both of the Murphys had played some part in every game, Sergi is getting better all the time and Ben Godfrey will be a very good player for us. You have to remember he is only turning 19 Ben and he was playing League Two last season so his progression has been really good. He'll be a real prospect.

'I thought they did great. It was nice for those lads to come in and perform as well as they did. Nothing to take from it apart from positives. Josh hit the post and he was really unfortunate not to score and you could see he was desperate to get his goal. I thought he performed really well, as did the rest of them. The one thing with Coventry City it is going to be tough for them because they have a really young team and they have some important league games coming up. We have six injuries at the moment so the one thing we have done is built a nice strong squad and we are looking to add to it. Going forward the future is bright.'

Neil also reserved praise for Kyle Lafferty after he opened the floodgates.

'He has been involved. He has come off the bench in other games and this was as dominant as I have seen him in the air. Generally I think with his size he could be more dominant. I felt he led the line well and had a good game. That is credit to him.

'He plays for his national team, he scores goals for them and there are certain games when he might be suited. He is very different from Cameron Jerome so he has something to offer.'
