Norwich City are tracking Australian midfielder Keanu Baccus ahead of a potential January move, according to national newspaper reports.

The St Mirren midfielder has attracted attention from some Championship clubs, including City, for the quality of his performances in Scotland this season after moving to Paisley last summer.

According to the Telegraph, Norwich are battling Middlesbrough and Cardiff for the 24-year-old's signature following some impressive performances in the World Cup last year.

A fee of £350,000 will be enough to tempt St Mirren into a sale this month, according to the report, such are the financial realities of Scottish football.

Baccus, who was originally born in South Africa, developed in Australia before progressing through the ranks at Western Sydney Wanderers. He went on to make over 100 appearances for the A-League side.

Impressive performances Down Under prompted St Mirren to acquire him on a two-year deal in July.

Alongside midfield partner Ethan Erhahon, Baccus has impressed in the Scottish Premiership this season, helping steer St Mirren to sixth in the table, three points behind Aberdeen.

The hard-grafting midfielder has received plaudits for the quality of his performances both domestically and internationally.

Rangers, Greek side AEK Athens and Belgian side Gent have also been linked with Baccus in recent weeks.

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson, speaking last month, expressed his desire to retain Baccus in his squad but acknowledged that the club faced an uphill battle to keep the 24-year-old.

“It’s all speculation about Keanu’s future which is hard to speak about. What I do know is he’s gone and had a fantastic World Cup," Robinson told Renfrewshire Live Sport.

“It was probably beyond his expectations, in terms of how late he came into the squad. He showed he certainly didn’t look out of place at that level. If anything I thought he was excellent in some of the games.

“He’ll be a St Mirren player for as long as I can hold on to him.

“We don’t hide the fact that the club has to sell players, that’s the model we work on, like most of the clubs at the bottom end of the division. We’ll wait and see what happens with him.”
