Chris Sutton says he would like the chance to manage Norwich City one day.

But the former Canaries striker – out of work after leaving Lincoln City last week – was quick to praise the work being done by former Celtic team-mate Paul Lambert.

Asked if he fancied the job, he said: 'Of course. I still live in the area and I have great memories from my time at Norwich, so it's a club I'm very fond of.

'Paul Lambert is doing extremely well there. I played with him at Celtic and he's a very good coach.'

Sutton's comments came in a question and answer feature for the match programme for Friday's England Under-21 international against Romania at Carrow Road.

The 37-year-old also listed City's famous European campaign as the highlight of his Carrow Road career, when he made more than 100 appearances before departing for Blackburn Rovers for a then British transfer record fee of 5m.

'It has to be playing in Europe in 1993-94, especially those games against Bayern Munich,' said Sutton.

'We'd done well in the league to qualify and had a very strong team – we weren't afraid of anyone. The atmosphere was amazing at both games and it was a special time for Norwich.

'I was just a youngster breaking through, but we had some great experienced players who helped me, like Ian Crook and Ruel Fox.'

Sutton's career ended in July, 2007, because of an eye injury, and he went in to management at Lincoln last October, only to quit for personal reasons last week.

That decision has led to speculation that former Canaries assistant manager Ian Butterworth, 46, will take over – sources claim he was interviewed before Sutton took over.

Butterworth – who now works as a scout – made more than 200 appearances in eight years at Carrow Road and returned in January last year as assistant to the newly-appointed Bryan Gunn.

But he resigned shortly after Paul Lambert's appointment as Gunn's successor at the start of last season.

• City expect a 20,000-plus crowd for Friday's England Under-21 match against Romania.

• Norwich midfielder Andrew Crofts has been drafted into the Wales squad to face Bulgaria and Switzerland. Crofts, who has been a big hit at Carrow Road since arriving at Brighton in the summer, has been called up in place of injured Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock.
