Norwich City boss Chris Hughton confirmed on Monday lunchtime the club are in advanced talks with Newcastle's Jonas Gutierrez over a proposed move from the Magpies.

The 30-year-old is in Norwich to finalise a deal but Hughton stopped short of confirming Gutierrez is poised to undergo a medical after agreeing terms on a proposed transfer switch. Hughton worked with Gutierrez during his stint in the north-east and the City boss insists the Argentine international would be a useful addition.

'All I can tell you is there is an interest in Jonas. He is someone I know very well from my time at Newcastle but at this moment there is nothing else to report on that. I can confirm an interest,' he said. 'We are hopeful something will come of that. I can't confirm he is having a medical, I can confirm we are interested. He is somebody who has played in the Premier League and been here for five years now. Kevin Keegan signed him I think. I arrived there in the February and he came in the summer (of 2008).

'He has a great worth ethic and can play in predominantly two positions although he has been used right across midfield. He is a good individual, very much a team player, a hard worker. He is a flexible player that can operate in a few positions.'

Gutierrez appeared to indicate his time was over at St James' Park after saying his farewells on his personal Twitter account over the weekend. Hughton did confirm the midfielder would not be eligible for Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay at Fulham if the club can finalise a deal.

'If he has said his goodbyes to Newcastle that is down to him,' said Hughton. 'He certainly wouldn't be involved at Fulham because I think he would have had to be involved in the first game. He is a player of experience and he is an Argentine international who has played nearly 200 games now here in England so he brings experience and quality.'
