Norwich City winger Nathan Redmond scored and played the full 90 minutes for the England Under-21s in a 1-0 UEFA European Under-21 Championships qualifying victory against Wales tonight.
Redmond started in a strong team alongside the likes of goalkeeper Jack Butland (on loan at Leeds United from Stoke City), midfielders Ravel Morrison (on loan at QPR from West Ham) and James Ward-Prowse (Southampton) and striker Saido Berahino (West Brom).
The match was a 6pm kick-off at Derby County's iPro Stadium and was still 0-0 at the break, with Redmond firing wide after a good pass from Jack Robinson in the 37th minute.
But the City youngster, who turns 20 tomorrow, opened the scoring for Gareth Southgate's side after going past three Wales players and firing a low shot from the edge of the area in the 56th minute.
It was his second goal for the Under-21s, as he received his ninth cap at that level.
At senior level, Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy was not handed a chance to impress England boss Roy Hodgson in tonight's 1-0 friendly win against Denmark at Wembley, with Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge scoring in the 82nd minute.
The City number one was on the substitutes bench alongside the two other goalkeepers in the inflated 30-man squad, Ben Foster of West Brom and former Canaries loanee Fraser Forster, now at Celtic, as undisputed number one Joe Hart started the match.
There was better news for two other City players though, with Wes Hoolahan and Russell Martin both starting for their countries.
Hoolahan started for the Republic of Ireland in a 2-1 friendly loss against Serbia at the Aviva Stadium, with Anthony Pilkington coming off the bench to replace his Norwich team-mate in the 61st minute, winning his third cap for his adopted country.
Martin played the full 90 minutes for Scotland in a 1-0 friendly win in Poland, with City team-mate Steven Whittaker an unused substitute. Canaries winger Robert Snodgrass pulled out of the squad after picking up a wrist injury in the 4-1 loss at Aston Villa on Sunday.
City's on-loan striker Johan Elmander came off the bench for Sweden at half-time during their 2-1 friendly defeat in Turkey, with Norwich team-mate Martin Olsson having pulled out to protect a troublesome shoulder.
Another of the City players to see action was central midfielder Alexander Tettey, who came on as a half-time substitute for Norway in their friendly in the Czech Republic.
The Ghanian-born midfielder helped Norway come back from 2-1 down at half-time to draw 2-2, with former Blackburn Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen scoring an 88th-minute equaliser.
Elsewhere, young Canaries winger Josh Murphy was also in action, for the England Under-19s. The 19-year-old started a 3-0 win against Turkey at the Chester Swansway Stadium.
Young Canaries midfielder Cameron McGeehan, on loan at Skrill Premier leaders Luton Town, also started for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s in a qualifier against Italy earlier today.
McGeehan made his full debut for the Ireland U21s and played 62 minutes of a 2-0 defeat to the young Italians at Mourneview Park, the home of County Armagh side Glenavon.
