The promising England Under-20 international has struggled to pin down a regular first-team place with the Canaries since making his breakthrough in the 2013/14 season but now has a chance to impress with the newly-promoted Championship club.

Dons boss Karl Robinson told his club's website: 'Josh is someone I known about for a long time. He was instrumental in Norwich winning the FA Youth Cup a couple of years back and he's played plenty of times in the Championship and Premier League level since then.

'Neil Adams trusted him to play in the top flight and that says a lot about Josh. He's got electric pace and quality – I'm looking forward to working with him.'

Murphy and his twin brother, Jacob, recently signed a new contract which keeps him at Carrow Road until the summer of 2017. Jacob has recently joined League One side Coventry City as the Canaries try to give the FA Youth Cup winners proper experience of first-team football.

The 20-year-olds are both highly thought of having emerged from City's academy system but were expected to have limited chances to feature this season following the club's promotion back to the Premier League.

Josh made five appearances for Wigan Athletic in a one-month loan with the then Championship side towards the end of last season and has made 29 appearances so far for the Canaries, although 25 of those have come as a substitute, scoring four goals.

The loan move follows the recent appointment of former City boss Neil Adams as the club's loans manager. Adams was in charge of the young Canaries team which won the FA Youth Cup in 2013 and knows the Murphy brothers well.

Fellow FA Youth Cup winner Carlton Morris is already out on loan as well, with current Canaries manager Alex Neil's former club Hamilton, in the Scottish Premiership, and full-back Harry Toffolo has also been linked with a loan move to MK Dons recently.
