Alex Neil faces an anxious wait to assess the extent of Youssouf Mulumbu's foot injury after the midfielder hobbled off in the closing stages of Saturday's pre-season winning finale against Brentford at Carrow Road.

Mulumbu may require a scan on the right foot that suffered an impact injury, as City closed out a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Wes Hoolahan and Cameron Jerome in either half – Andre Gray replying for the visitors prior to the interval.

The former West Brom recruit was again impressive for his new club, but Neil was remaining cautiously optimistic Mulumbu could still feature in his plans for next weekend's Premier League kick-off against Crystal Palace.

'We are hoping he is going to be okay but these type of things usually take 24 hours or so to settle down, at least, until we know the full extent of it,' said the City boss. 'We'll probably get it scanned tonight if we can and then we'll have a better idea if there is an injury there. It is just something on the outside of his foot so its difficult to say if that is a knock which will wear off or whether it is going to be more serious.

'Obviously we are hoping he is going to be okay and we can put him into our plans for the next game. He is a good player, with a lot of Premier League experience and I played him in a slightly unfamiliar role today with a lot of personnel changes in the game. I thought he equipped himself well and the more games he plays for us the better he will be.'

Neil felt Brentford offered the test he was looking for to sign off Norwich's pre-season preparations.

'I thought we caused them a lot of problems,' he said. 'Do I think were they better than us? No. Did I think we were better than them? Yes. I thought we played really well, some of our movement was excellent and it was only a bit of sloppy finishing but in the second half we got into some good areas, created plenty of chances, against a team we found difficult to play against last year and that was one of the main reasons for taking the game.'
