Michael McGovern is set to miss Norwich City's Championship trip to Leeds United this weekend after the death of his mother.

The Belfast Telegraph reported on Thursday morning Carmel McGovern died earlier this week from cancer, with her funeral set to take place on Saturday in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.

Mrs McGovern, along with husband Terry, and other family members travelled to France last summer to watch the ex-Hamilton keeper star in his country's superb Euro 2016 run to the knock out stages of the competition.

She also attended the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards in February, to watch her son presented with the George Best Breakthrough trophy.

Northern Ireland's former First Minister and Fermanagh MLA, Arlene Foster, led the tributes.

'The McGovern family are very well regarded in Fermanagh and the whole community will be greatly saddened by this news,' she said. 'My deepest sympathy to Michael, his dad and all the family.'

McGovern signed a three-year deal to join Norwich on a free transfer last summer, linking up again with ex-Accies' chief Alex Neil, following his stunning displays in France.

The 32-year-old has made 22 appearances for the Canaries in his debut season but in recent weeks had been back up to John Ruddy at Carrow Road.
