Pierre Lees-Melou has described his output at Norwich City this season as 'not enough'.

Dean Smith admitted that he felt the experienced French midfielder should be scoring more goals after he opened his account in City's 2-0 victory over Burnley last weekend.

City's boss felt his performance in that win warranted another start for the 28-year-old, who signed for City from Ligue 1 outfit Nice last summer.

His adaptation to the English game has been slower than many anticipated and the man himself is unhappy with his own output since arriving in Norfolk.

Lees-Melou agrees with the thoughts of his manager and is hoping he can improve his goal contributions before the end of the season.

“Of course [I agree], I am a midfielder," the Frenchman said when asked about Smith's statement.

“Sometimes I play as a defensive midfielder and sometimes as an offensive midfielder.

“If I look at my season, I am not happy because I have only scored one goal and zero assists. It is not enough.

“I know that and it is up to me to improve that and prove to everybody that I can do more.”

Lees-Melou has predominantly played in a central midfield role for City this season under both Daniel Farke and Smith.

But in recent weeks, the Frenchman has been occupying a more advanced position and is tasked with supporting Teemu Pukki's efforts up front.

Lees-Melou is enjoying the renewed sense of freedom that has come with playing higher up on the pitch.

“In the last two games, I have played as a number ten with a lot of liberty.

“I have to defend but when we attack I am free. I can go everywhere and I know that I am capable to score or to give assists.

“I like the freedom because I have a lot of space on the pitch," Lees-Melou said.

“That was the goal today, to be compact. We knew that we had a lot of space in behind with me and Teemu so that is how we approached it today.

“I like this position. For me, as long as I am in the starting XI, then I am happy."
