Here is Paddy’s verdict on Dean Smith’s Norwich, who stopped the rot with Teemu Pukki on target for a landmark Canaries’ career goal.

• Angus Gunn 7

Superb tip over to foil Raul Jimenez in the 58th minute, with Wolves threatening to roll over Norwich after Rayan Ait-Nouri’s equaliser.

Got his angles right in the 86th minute to gather a rising effort from Chiquinho at his near post. Early scare when Pedro Neto’s cross evaded his centre backs and had him scrambling across his line but the ball cleared the far post. Right position to gather Ruben Neves’ long range strike just before half-time.

Took decisive action to race 20 yards outside his box to head clear but needed Ben Gibson to mop up.

• Sam Byram 6

Another new deployment on the right of a central defensive three. Won a foot race with Neto to shepherd a ball back to Gunn.

Put his foot to the accelerator again in the opposite direction midway through the opening period when he drove past Ait-Nouri to exchange passes with Max Aarons, but Kieran Dowell elected not to play him back in.

Vital touch inside his own six yard box in the 84th minute to deflect Chiquinho’s cross. Broke again on the counter and clipped a tempting diagonal ball towards Teemu Pukki, who slipped as he chested it down.

• Grant Hanley (C) 6

Faced a different threat to that of Jamie Vardy’s runs in behind in midweek at Leicester. Much more comfortable with the play in front of him, although conjured a timely sliding interception to cut out Daniel Podence’s probing ball destined for Fabio Silva.

Headed away Hwang Hee-Chan’s snapshot from the edge of the area. Left the same player unattended when he glanced a header over from the penalty spot.

Rose to meet Mathias Normann’s deep free kick but was unable to divert it on target.

• Ben Gibson 6

Back in the side, and that added protection alongside both Sam Byram and Grant Hanley seems to suit him at the highest level.

Sound defensive instincts and reading of the game were evident in the 25th minute, with an important clearing touch to help on Joao Moutinho’s free kick.

Won a big header near the half way line against Hee-Chan after Gunn was scrambling back towards his own goal in the second half.

• Max Aarons 6

Rolled in Pukki to nudge Norwich in front. Was clearly detailed to get high and wide with Byram pulling into that right back berth.

A couple of meaty tussles with Ait-Nouri in the first half. Took the contact and a painful whack when he used his body to shield the ball from Neto on the edge of his own box.

• Mathias Normann 5

Prominent in the opening period but eventually succumbed to an ankle knock. Best moment was a clever clip over the top for Pukki to race through and test John Ruddy.

Flat-footed when Ait-Nouri responded quicker to a bouncing ball to head past Gunn.

Gorgeous piece of play in the 22nd minute with a body swerve to control and move the ball in one motion, and then a step over, to work a shooting chance that ended with him skying a shot on his left. Free kick header over by Hanley.

• Billy Gilmour 5

Protection in behind ensured there was less chance of being exposed without the ball. Kept City ticking with some pleasing passages of possession in that first half. But withdrawn after rolling his ankle.

Dimi Giannoulis 6

Smith felt he was hard done by to concede the free kick that led to Wolves’ leveller. Clearly suited to a wing back posting. Offered an overlapping option for Pukki in the 26th minute before a drifting cross to earn a corner.

Another burst and square ball for Dowell led to a Pukki chance. Timely block when Jonny lashed goalwards at the back post. Booked for tugging back Hee-Chan.

• Pierre Lees-Melou 6

Slipped a ball through for an early chance Pukki lashed wide. Important tackle just prior to the hour mark halted a Wolves counter and spiralled towards Pukki to burst through and test Ruddy.

Dipped inside Jonny in stoppage time but hooked a shot well wide of the target from the edge of the area.

• Kieran Dowell 6

Released Pukki perfectly for a big sight of Ruddy’s goal. May have sensed a chance on the rebound when Ruddy later blocked another Pukki effort but Toti slid in to foil him from eight yards.

But wasteful on a second half free kick he tried to slip down the side of the Wolves’ wall for Pukki that was intercepted by Boly.

• Teemu Pukki 8

The shining light in a season of dross. An 11th Premier League goal of the campaign and a 78th senior goal for the club in 166 appearances to move alongside Grant Holt in the all-time City list.

But as Smith rightly pointed out in the midst of his post-match eulogy, Pukki could have walked off at the break with a hat-trick. Started with a wayward lash on his left from 20 yards.

Then drew Ruddy in the 10th minute, but tried to roll the ball towards the far post and saw it drift behind. In behind again in the 15th minute but this time Ruddy smothered with his legs. Underlined his selfless attitude to offer for a clearance he guided into the channel before threading a ball between two Wolves’ players for Giannoulis.

Conor Coady blocked his shot in the 37th minute but seconds later was taken into deep water again and this time Pukki rifled a low, wrong-footing effort between his legs to deceive Ruddy.

More circumspect in the second half, with Wolves’ rousing as an attacking force, but a drifting run past Jonny put him in range before he curled wide on his left.

Subs:

• Lukas Rupp (for Gilmour, 62) 5

• Jacob Sorensen (for Normann, 70) 5

• Jon Rowe (for Dowell, 83) 5

Squared up Boly in stoppage time, before producing a low cross that was cleared for a corner.
