Norwich City pair Robbie Brady and Wes Hoolahan had a disappointing night as the Republic of Ireland missed out on automatic qualification for the finals of the European Championships in Finland.
Brady played for the full 90 minutes and Hoolahan came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute as the Republic were beaten 2-1 in Warsaw.
The defeat meant Martin O'Neill's side finished third in Group D and must now regroup for a two legged play-off next month for a place in France.
Scotland won their dead rubber in Gibraltar 6-0, with ex-Canary Chris Martin scoring his first international goal. City midfielder Graham Dorrans made his Scotland comeback in the one-sided encounter, while Russell Martin and Steven Whittaker were unused substitutes.
Kyle Lafferty returned to action for Northern Ireland after suspension and while he drew a blank he helped the Province finish top of their group after a 1-1 draw in Finland.
