Norwich secured a bonus point win to extend their lead at the top of London 3NE to two points against a side that had comfortably beaten them earlier in the season.

The early exchanges made it clear that Canvey Island had travelled with the hope of securing another win to ease their relegation worries. Although Norwich took the lead with a penalty by Brown in the 16th minute Canvey levelled when they kicked a penalty 10 minutes later.

JC Brown scored the first try of the match in the 27th minute when Norwich were awarded a penalty near to the left hand touch line on 10 metres. He took a quick tap penalty and made a solo run past several defenders to score in the corner that he then converted to give Norwich a 10-3 lead.

A serious injury to vice-captain Scott Hancocks occurred moments later when he damaged the knee that had put him out of the game for a season two years ago. One of Norwich's most effective backs since his return, he will miss the remainder of the season.

With a minute to go to half-time the referee awarded a penalty to Norwich and issued a yellow card to a Canvey forward for a deliberate knock on when Norwich were in a good scoring opportunity wide on the left. Brown could not to extend the home side's lead.

Despite having a man in the sin bin Canvey started the second half brightly and doubled their score following a penalty. This was the last time they would trouble the scorers until the final minute of the game.

Three minutes after Canvey Island had reduced the arrears a storming run by Norwich No 8 David Byrne resulted in a penalty which Brown kicked, taking the score to 13-6.

Ten minutes later prop Joe Riches scored a try after an interception by wing Rob Micklethwaite who ran from the Norwich 22 to the opposition one before being overhauled. He paused and sent the chaser the wrong way before popping the pass to Riches who was charging up in support and finished the move off. Brown failed to convert from near the touchline.

Norwich increased the pressure and were rewarded after a quick penalty by Brown resulted in a try by Darby, bringing the score to 23-6.

Norwich recognised that they had the opportunity of gaining a bonus point win and five minutes later a dummy and searing break by captain David Micklethwaite from well within the Norwich 22 was carried on by winger Walker who gave man-of-the-match Parrott a scoring pass out of the tackle on the 10 metre line which he duly turned into the bonus point try. Brown was unable to convert from the touchline.

Canvey Island never gave up hope and in the last minute were rewarded with a penalty try after a series of scrums on the line, the last of which the referee judged had been collapsed illegally. The conversion was kicked, taking the score to 28-13.

Norwich will be aiming to maintain their promotion push at lowly Sudbury next week.
