Norfolk left it late to snatch a point from their Anglian League battle with Leicestershire & Rutland at Hunstanton.

The morning foursomes did not go well with Norfolk winning just one point courtesy of Matthew Alden from Eaton and Kit Holmes, back from his studies north of the border, proving his knowledge of his home course is as strong as ever.

Going into the afternoon session 3-1 down captain Iain Yule picked his big guns to go out first in order to try to swing the momentum of the match back in Norfolk's favour.

Sadly, Norfolk managed only a point from the first four matches and at one point were 6-2 down with four matches still on the course. Fortunately, King's Lynn's Jack Yule, Eaton's Jamie Smith and Chris White, playing around his home course, all managed wins and so it was left to captain Yule – standing in for the injured Matthew Bacon – to rescue the match.

'It's ridiculous the number of injuries and call-offs we have had to contend with this year. I'm getting more games now for the first team than I ever did before when I was available for them,' said Yule.

'The whole point of sticking myself out last was to start with the strongest players first and then try and build up a bit of momentum, try and get two or three points on the board but it was sheer fluke the way that worked.

'Jack had not played well in the morning and was spitting fire and eager to get out in the afternoon, Jamie is always solid and Chris was at home and they all played really well,' added Yule. 'Hunstanton is playing absolutely brutal and if you miss the fairway then you are in a world of pain. So I told the guys at lunchtime to hit fairways and greens and I think that is what the last four guys did,' explained Yule, who battled back from being two down on the 13th hole to win his match on the 17th green.

'I'm chuffed to bits with the way the season has gone so far. We've still got to play Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire,' added Yule, whose side sit third in the Anglian League, 'So if we can get two victories it's not inconceivable that we could win.'

Similarly, second team captain Steve Tidy was delighted with the 6-6 draw his men achieved away against Leicestershire & Rutland at Scrapcroft Golf Club.

Tidy has been particularly pleased with the foursomes performances this year, which have provided a solid platform for the singles matches.

'We were two and a half to one and a half up at lunch and in a good position,' said Costessey Park's Tidy, who had to withdraw from the team because of injury.

'It was then up and down all afternoon with some really good matches. But in the end it all came down to the final match when we were in a winning position. Tom Nudd was one up going down the last and lost the last hole, but he was two down with four left to play and won three on the spin. He did well to get the half in the end.

'This season has seen a real turnaround in the team's fortunes. The last three years the second team have won just one half, this year we have won one, lost one and drawn one. We are getting a good team spirit and all the boys are pulling together. It gives you a platform to perform in the afternoon. We have got a home game against Lincolnshire at Sprowston next and then an away match against Cambridgeshire. If we win those two then we have a chance of finishing second in the league.'
