Some of the fastest cars to compete at Snetterton this year will contest the British Sprint Championship this weekend on the 100 layout of the Norfolk venue.

With speeds approaching 150mph the contestants need to be highly skilled to set the best time possible with little in the way of practice.

Currently fast lady Heather Calder leads the points table and the Scottish racer has yet to be beaten this year in the Gould GR55 NME, which she shares with father Colin.

At the last round, just 6/100th of a second separated the pair so expect another close battle for maximum points with Heather determined to retain her hard-won 2017 title.

John Graham, in a similar car to the Calders, has the equipment to challenge for fastest time of the day while Stewart Robb with his potent 5 litre Pilbeam MP88B will be able to stretch its legs on the finish straight and may just be able to give his rivals a run for their money.

In the concurrent AEMC Sprint Championship, look out for the battle for supremacy in the 1100cc single seater category with Tony Beesley, John Gregson and Simon Wallis all keen to claim the honours.

The Road Going Kit Car class currently has Stephen Lang in the lead, but Paul Beesley has defeated Lang's Caterham R500 once this season with his Westfield Megabusa and would like to do so again.

Sprinting is not restricted to racing cars as the battle in the saloon sections testify with Carl and Keith Warnell taking on Tim Cole's Ford Fiesta with their Citroen Saxo VTS.

Likewise there is little to choose between the class leading MG ZR of Donald Maciver, Brian Kirby's Mazda MX5 and the Honda Civic Type R of David Knapp.

Local interest comes in the form of Ely's Sarah Munns, who has given her highly-modified Mini an airing or two in the series while Chris Judge looks handy in his Lotus Elise.

The two-day event starts with practice runs in the morning followed by the competition in the afternoon with the fastest 12 runners getting into the run-off for the honour of setting the Fastest Time of the Day with entry to the event free all weekend.
