Norfolk's Callum Brown has vowed to keep proving his worth to national selectors after leaving this weekend's Aviva English Schools' Track and Field Championships in Gateshead clutching gold.

The 18-year-old never intended to be strutting his stuff at Gateshead International Stadium in the first place, the hammer thrower having gone over the required World Junior standard this season only to miss out on a place at this week's championships in Barcelona as two rivals had gone further. But Brown went some way to banishing the disappointment as he won the senior hammer at a canter thanks to a best effort of 68.52m, nearly 10 metres better than his closest rival.

Paston College's Brown admits it is hard to block missing out on a trip to Spain from his mind but he knows exactly how he can banish his 2012 nightmare next season.

'I am very pleased with this result. This was my final year so I wanted to come back and end on a high and I am glad I managed to do that,' he said. 'My season has been up and down. I got the qualifying for the Worlds but I didn't get picked so it has been a bit of a come down from that really. The target for next year is to hopefully make it to the European Juniors and make up for this year's disappointment of missing out on the worlds.'

The other local victory came in the senior boys triple jump where Jimi Tele jumped 15m 01. This marked his fourth win in these championships. A scholarship to a college in the USA will follow for him in a few weeks.

Brown's fellow City of Norwich AC starlet Oli Bradfield collected bronze in the inter javelin with a distance of 63.32m. Flegg High School's Natoya Rimmer also collected bronze, this time in the junior high-jump thanks to a new personal best of 1.63m.

Ashley Waterson ran a good race to finish fourth in the junior boys 1,500m in a personal best time of 4 mins 10.3 secs. Norfolk's young sprinters also did well. In a competitive junior boys 200m Dominic Burnham finished fourth in the excellent time of 23.2 secs. Laura Johnson broke new ground when finishing fifth in the under 17 girls 100m in 12.35 secs. Richard Taylor was another sprinter to do well when finishing fifth in the senior boys 200m in 21.8 secs.

Two young javelin throwers finished in sixth place in their events. Elspeth Jameson threw 36.04m and Jonathan Tomes threw 44.98m.

Sasha Birrell improved the county record again by jumping 3.30m in the under 17 girls pole vault. She finished eighth.
