Norwich player Maddie Brooks, fresh from helping Norfolk's ladies team to maintain their status in Group Two of the Aegon Summer County Cup, won the ladies singles competition.

In the final she overcame Hannah Vickers from Suffolk 6-3, 6-0 with a fantastic display of all-court tennis. Brooks was also runner-up in the girls under-18 event, losing 6-4, 7-5 to another Norwich player, Maria Andrews, in a very entertaining match.

Andrews, who remained undefeated throughout the junior tournament at Cromer two weeks ago, continued her fine form. Along with her twin sister, Joy, she also won the under-16 girls doubles 7-6(2), 6-1.

Maria wasn't finished there, in partnering Norfolk team-mate Johnnie Carmichael she won the under-18 mixed final against a pair from Cambridge, HPC, 6-4, 6-1.

Vianne Palfrey, another winner from Cromer, won the under-14 girls by beating fellow Norwich player Monica Ravirag 6-4, 6-1. Vianne then doubled up with Frances Evans to win the under-14 girls doubles 7-6(0), 6-0. Vianne and Harry Kettering were runners-up in the under-14 mixed event.

Monica Ravirag won the under-12 girls, 6-1, 6-1 in a one-sided final, Jesmine Haylett won the under-10 girls event and Joe Hendon was runner-up in the under-10 boys event.

The Road to Wimbledon county finals were held at the East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club over the weekend of July 12-13.

Players from all over the county took part, from King's Lynn to Acle, with the girls event won by Emily Barrett (Easton) who beat Kaci-Leigh Witham (King Edward VII School). The boys event was won by Oliver Palmer (Wymondham) who beat Reuben Macmillan (Cromer).

The winners have qualified to play in the national finals held at Wimbledon last week.

On Monday all the players received a welcome introduction by former British number one Tim Henman, in his role as an HSBC embassador.

It was then time to collect player passes which provide full access to all areas of the All England Club – including credit for food in the players' lounge.

To start, the finals players competed in box leagues before qualifying for the knockout stages.

Oliver faced some tough competition in the boys under-14 county finals, losing his three matches, but Emily did manage to win one of her games in the under-14 girls county group.

She bounced back from a 6-4 defeat in the first set of her match against Katy Lewin, from Hereford and Worcester, to win the second 6-3 and then take the tie break 10-7.
