The Burnhams Tennis Club has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a re-opening ceremony for its new courts.
Several hundred people gathered to celebrate the Burnham Market club's anniversary and watch Sir Nicholas and Lady Grimshaw cut the tape at its re-opening ceremony.
Sir Nicholas, a keen tennis fan and a founder member of the club – at Burnham Market – held the audience captive as he recalled his early attempts at the game.
His architectural firm is currently involved in Wimbledon's development plan and, whilst he applauded the technical precision of the players at the top of their game, he felt that the level of friendly competitive tennis he'd enjoyed at club level was equally important.
The club played host to Lord Leicester, its patron, and 120 guests at its buffet lunch, during which chairman Liz Hankin thanked all those who'd been involved with the founding of the club in 1989, its many supporters and generous benefactors and those members responsible for organising the courts' resurfacing and the anniversary celebrations.
During the day over 30 youngsters took part in a tennis competition. The winner of the new Harold Moorhouse Charity Jubilee Shield was won by Freddie Scott – the most improved local player.
The Moorhouse Charity supports the club's youth tennis programme in the village and the club is associated with the local primary school's Mini-Wimbledon, held in June each year.
The afternoon was rounded off with a picnic, accompanied by the DixieMix Jazz Band.
