Norfolk's Andrew Marshall failed in his bid to win a place in The Open when he slid down the leaderboard in the second round of international qualifying at Royal Johannesburg in South Africa.

Three places were on offer and Marshall was on course to qualify when his first round of two-under 69 put him a share of third place. But he finished tied 12th after a second round three-over 74.

Marshall, from Dereham, had a disappointing start when he bogeyed the first two holes. His only birdie of the second round followed on the third, but he dropped more shots on the 12th and 17th.

Floris de Vries of the Netherlands won the qualifier on ten-under par and will be joined at Royal St Georges by South Africans Neil Schietekat and Martin Maritz, who tied second on six-under.
