Lowestoft Town boss Dale Brooks has expressed his concerns over the potential shake-up of the National League system.

Under plans from the FA's Leagues Committee there will be four divisions at step three level - the level Lowestoft currently play at – from next season.

The proposals would see Lowestoft come under the Southern League's umbrella in a division that runs from the east coast to the west of Birmingham, potentially meaning a more travel for the Trawlerboys.

It was the amount of travel that ultimately undermined Lowestoft's efforts in the National League set-up, which eventually resulted in their relegation in 2016, and Brooks fears a similar situation could develop.

'Whatever happens we don't want more travel and I don't think that's what the changes they want to make are geared towards,' he said. 'If they put us in the Southern League as has been suggested then there is likely to be more travel and once again it looks like Lowestoft has got the short straw. Things may change between now and the end of the season but as a club we do not want any more travel. It counts against the club with regard to cost and that's not something we would obviously want.

'Where Lowestoft is, is one of the club's biggest challenges in terms of travel and recruitment.

'It would not be a good thing if these changes that are planned means that club has to incur even more cost.'

Lowestoft were due to entertain Wingate & Finchley at the Amber Dew Events Stadium this afternoon but the weather forced it to be postponed. They will go into the game on the back of a creditable draw at play-off chasing Hendon when Jake Reed's goal earned the Blues a share of the spoils.

'I thought the lads were tremendous because as I said last week it's very tough times for the club both on and off the field at the moment,' said Brooks, who took the sole managerial reins when Ady Gallagher stepped down last year. 'Every week we're asking them to go again and they have never let us down.

'I was pleased for Jake – if you give him chances then more often than not he will put them away. The system we play he has had to lead the line on his own and he has done that very well.'
