Defender Matt Halliday has decided to leave Lowestoft Town to sign for Wroxham in pursuit of regular first team football, writes Mark Armstrong.

The former Norwich City defender played a bit-part role in the Trawlerboys' Ryman League Premier Division campaign last season and has decided to join the Yachtsmen, who were promoted from the Ridgeons Premier League last month.

Lowestoft director of football Craig Fleming admitted to being sorry to see the popular 25-year-old leave the club but said they couldn't guarantee him a first team place.

'He has gone to Wroxham to get games – his chances were going to be limited at Lowestoft and he has decided to move elsewhere,' said Fleming, who has been busy in negotiations with the vast majority of his squad out of contract following the season's end. 'He has been a really good player for us in his time here. He has had his fair share of disappointments but he has been a credit to himself in the way he has handled it.

'He is a really good friend of mine and we played golf regularly but he has always been top class for Lowestoft whenever we've called upon him.

'He moved to Manchester for a little while but then came back into the fold. He perhaps didn't play as much as he would have liked but he was never a problem in that sense.

'He is a top lad that will always be welcome at the club – the lads socialise together so I'm sure they haven't seen the last of him.'

Fleming hopes to formalise his squad plans for the new season 'in the next seven to 10 days' and has already spoken to other clubs about potential signings.

'We have spoken to a few different clubs about players and a few of them have gone away to think about things and we should know more soon,' he added.

Contracts have been offered to all the squad that finished the last campaign and Fleming is confident the bulk of the squad will remain at Crown Meadow although several players are weighing up offers from other clubs.

'Talks are going well – the vast majority have signed up for next season which is good news but we are not quite ready to say exactly who is and who isn't staying at the club,' said Fleming.
