King's Lynn Town boss Gary Setchell has spoken of his frustration after his side's Southern League Premier Division clash at Cambridge City was postponed minutes before kick-off last night.

A part of the pitch at Westwood Road – City's temporary home ground at St Ives – was deemed unplayable by Lowesfoft-based referee Adrian Sonnerude, who called the game off at 7.10pm.

Linnets boss Setchell said: 'We've called games off at Lynn this season because of protocol and the pitch hasn't been playable.

'The people at St Ives have seen the pitch a lot worse this year and both managers were happy to play the game.

'None of us are going to put our players at risk so if both managers were happy to play the game then it should have gone ahead.

'I'd done my team talk and the first I knew about it was when I came out of the changing room and my son Danny told me that the referee was thinking of calling it off.

'He has made a decision which could have been made by a local referee earlier.'

Setchell admitted that he felt sorry for both players and supporters of the club.

'Lee Stevenson has travelled down from Sheffield, Kern Miller has had to catch two trains while two or three other players have had to leave off work early.

'I feel sorry for the players and also the supporters but there's nothing we can do about it now other than lick our wounds.

'All I can do now is get in my car, get a McDonald's and go home.'

Opposing boss Gary Roberts echoed Setchell's sentiments about the derby clash being postponed so late.

Roberts said: 'I'm really disappointed. We played here last Wednesday against St Neots and the pitch was in a lot worse condition.

'St Ives also played here on Saturday and there's hardly been any rain since then.

'The groundsman spends a lot of time getting the pitch prepared. We've had players travel up from north and west London while Lynn had a player travel down from Sheffield.

'There has been a lot of mileage go in and the carbon footprint hasn't gone too well tonight has it?'

The Linnets, who make the long 480-mile round trip to the south coast to take on Dorchester on Saturday, had gone into the evening hoping to complete their second derby double of the season, having beaten the Lilywhites 1-0 at The Walks earlier in the campaign.
