Gary Setchell has revealed he came tantalisingly close to signing hot-shot striker Ricky Miller before he returned to Stamford.

The King's Lynn Town boss, speaking after his side's dramatic 2-1 triumph at Gresley on Saturday, admitted he almost prevented the frontman rejoining the Daniels last week.

But it wasn't to be and the Linnets manager insisted he still wants to bring in another player to help strengthen his in-form outfit's play-off ambitions.

Setchell said: 'I thought I was close to strengthening the squad before (Ricky) Miller went and signed back for Stamford. I had a conversation with his dad this week as I was trying to get him in.

'I thought it was almost done at one point but he done a U-Turn and went to Stamford – which is a shame because he can play on the left, he can play on the right, he can play up top and he's a handful. But he chose to go back to Stamford. It's one of them things and we'll keep trying.'

The 23-year-old signed for the Daniels in November and bagged 15 Evo-Stik Division One South goals before joining higher-level Arlesey Town in January.

But much like Lynn winger's Steve Spriggs' short-lived spell away from The Walks with Boston United, Miller didn't last long in his new surrounding and rejoined second-placed Stamford on Thursday.

The Linnets, fourth, will climb above their Lincolnshire rivals if they win their two games in hand and keep up their sensational start to 2013.

Setchell's high-fliers have won all of their five league matches this year and are unbeaten in six Evo-Stik games.

The Lynn boss was delighted with his men's latest triumph at the weekend which came courtesy of Russell Dunkley's first-half goal and Jordan Yong's 89th-minute winner.

'I think it showed how far we've come because we dominated the game in the first half,' said Setchell.

'It was probably one of our best first-half away performances. We could have been 3-0 or 4-0 up at half-time. And then we get a real kick in the teeth just after the break (when they equalised) and for 10 minutes you think 'the lads are folding here a little bit'.

'And then yet again we kicked on again, and again, and I thought in the last 20 minutes they were playing from a draw at home and we were trying to get a win away.

That's exactly what we done, it was a tremendous strike by Jordan. I think we deserved all three points and I don't think there's any complaints.

'If the top four or five keep winning, and the teams below us keep tripping up, then the play-offs will be shaping themselves up. We've got ourselves in a fantastic position.'
