Kart racer Oliver Clarke is now a British champion after coming top in a competition previously won by famous Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton, David Coulthard and Jenson Button.

The 12-year-old finished at the top of the table at the British Super One Series British Championships and hopes to one day become a professional racing driver.

The youngster, who was racing in the Honda Cadet class, competed against 29 other drivers and finished top of the table in every race except one – where he slipped by six points.

He said: 'It has been an amazing experience that I have enjoyed so much although at times it has been tough to keep at the top of the table.

'But that's all about learning and being a sportsman.'

He added: 'I would like to thank my mum and dad for all their support, my team BRK and my school Iceni Academy.'

Oliver, of Downham Market and who soon turns 13, will move into a different racing class next season but leaves the Honda Cadet series with a number of titles, including British champion, English champion, Super Prix and East Anglian.

He has not stopped since gaining the title last weekend – yesterday he was meeting Lewis Hamilton's ex-mechanic to find out if there could be an opportunity of working with his team.

Oliver's next steps are to compete in races in Europe if he can find sponsorship.

His mum Claire Clarke said: 'Oliver has done so well this season and is showing so much potential for the future.'

She added: 'Next season he will be competing in bigger and faster karts which travel at around 70mph. So that he can start competing in Europe, we are looking for sponsors who are interested in supporting his talent.'

Oliver will collect his championship trophy at the Super One Series Awards night in January next year.
