Sixty miles to celebrate their 60 years was Godric CC's recipe for success at their Golden Jubilee ride.

Members of the Bungay club followed a counter-clockwise route round their modern-day patch, taking in Beccles, Brooke, Long Stratton and Halesworth. The 17 members were sent on their way by Bungay town mayor Judy Cloke and Town Reeve Richard Cundy and included two Godric founder members – Barry Minns and Geoff Mayne.

The funds raised on the 60th anniversary ride will go to Bungay Library, where the club holds its meetings.

Lee Bark, former East District time trial champion, returned from a four-year lay-off, straight into second place in the Stowmarket & District 10 – just three seconds down on winner Peter Balls (21:01).

'I'd forgotten how much a time trial hurts,' said the civilian PT instructor – now aged 51 – working with the army at Wattisham. Bark was tempted back to fitness in order to join servicemen on a pass-storming holiday watching the Tour in the Alps. The early morning on the Rougham-Woolpit dual carriageway was cool and quiet, though a cross/headwind developed on the shorter return leg.

Veteran's categories were based on ten-year age groups. Top Norfolk riders were, in the 40-49s, Jason Turner (Norwich ABC, 22:02), in the 50s - Mark Ready (Diss CC, 23:55), the 60s Chris Nudds (CC Breckland, 22:56) and in the 70 + Ray Ross (Comrades, 28:16).

The overall points standings in the Lotus Cycle Race League have been announced. Lowestoft rider Liam Gentry (Strada Sport) is the clear winner – showing that success is still possible for someone with a young family and heavy work commitments - at least where relatively short races such as the one hour events at Hethel are concerned.

Gentry scored 71 points, second was Martin Ruepp (Iceni Velo, 51), followed by Simon Millard (Iceni, 34) and James Browne (VC Norwich 30).

In the top class Jef Schils Memorial road race near Colchester, James Browne stayed with the race longer than any other local rider, only being dropped in the last ten miles of the 96 mile race, where it was necessary to be able to sustain 30mph to have any chance of breaking away. Winner was full-time cyclist Matt Cronshaw (IG Sigma Sport).

Lower category riders contested the Falling Leaves road race near Saffron Walden. 'A strong westerly headwind on the finishing climb; no attempt at a break got more than ten seconds,' reports VC Norwich's Will Bamber who was 15th in the bunch charge.

Overall Result - Lotus Cycle Race Series 2013: 1 Liam Gentry (Strada Sport) 71 points, 2 M Ruepp (Iceni Velo) 51, 3 S Millard (Iceni Velo) 34, 4 J Browne (VC Norwich) 30, 5 S Hurrell (API) 29, 6 G Thomas (VCN) 24, 7 G Collins (Ipswich BC) 23, 8 M Hunter (Colchester Rovers) 19, 9 D Zagni (Ipswich BC) 15, 10 N Esser (Strada Sport) 14.
