Hockey legend inspires Norwich pupils with golden guest appearance

Olympic champion Kate Richardson-Walsh has been coaching some Norfolk youngsters.

Richardson-Walsh captained Great Britain’s women to golden glory at the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning Team GB’s first ever goal medal in women’s hockey.

Norwich School welcomed the England and GB star, who also captained the bronze success at London 2012, on Monday.

After starting the day with a coaching session at Norwich Lower School, where pupils were given a chance to get her autograph, hold her gold medal and ask questions.

The hockey great, made an MBE in 2015 and an OBE in 2017 for services to her sport, then addressed the Norwich School sport scholars who had the opportunity to hear her speak about her journey to Rio. She shared tips on setting goals, the importance of team work and having high aspirations.

Norwich School’s director of sport, Joe Cowan, said: “It was fantastic that our pupils had the opportunity to access one of the greatest hockey players of the decade.”

In the afternoon, some of the senior school hockey teams were coached by Richardson-Walsh at the school’s Redmayne Fields hockey pitch.

The Manchester-born hockey star retired after the 2016 Olympics with 375 appearances, 19 medals, 49 goals and 13 years as GB and England captain.
