Striker Shane Tolley is desperate to score the goals that fire King's Lynn Town to promotion this season.

The 27-year-old frontman is no stranger to helping sides move up the non-league ladder after bagging 56 goals in two seasons when St Neots Town achieved back-to-back promotions.

He now hopes to replicate that success, which saw the Saints pip Lynn to the 2010/11 United Counties Premier Division title, at The Walks and spearhead Gary Setchell's dream of achieving a similar feat.

Tolley, who left Blue Square North Histon to join the Linnets on Saturday, said: 'I think I can bring goals — hopefully.

'That's my main purpose and that's what I'd like to bring. That and hard work. Obviously the end goal is promotion for the team and to get the club back where they belong, in a higher league.

'I 100pc think Lynn could be at Step Three next season. You only have to look at the crowds to know Lynn are still a massive club. There's no doubt King's Lynn will progress and I want to be a part of that and hopefully I can help the club do that.'

The former Peterborough United youngster left St Neots this summer to join big-spending Spalding and scored 20 times before linking up with former Saints boss Dennis Greene at Step Two Histon.

He scored one goal during his brief stint at the Glassworld Stadium before the Stutes announced they were suffering financial difficulties and the pair joined a host of others in departing the troubled club.

The goal-machine, nicknamed Custard, got his Lynn career off to a flyer on Saturday by helping himself to a brace against Hucknall Town. However, his dream debut turned sour as the Evo-Stik Division One South high-fliers slumped to a 4-2 home defeat.

'Thank you for all the welcoming and good luck messages,' said the Peterborough-based player on Twitter. 'Two goals on my debut would normally be a dream start, but am absolutely gutted we lost the game! A minor hiccup I'm sure, back to winning ways ASAP! Can't wait to get going again! #linnets'

Tolley will have to wait to pull on a yellow shirt again as he's cup-tied for tomorrow's mouth-watering home FA Trophy second round tie against Blue Square Premier AFC Telford United.

Setchell, who expects his new recruit to be a hit, said: 'People know about him because he's been a thorn in our side - certainly the first year I was here.

'I've seen him a couple of times since he's been at a higher league and he's a player that I really, really like. He's a real clever footballer and his goals ratio and his ability to finish is second to none.

'You can't have too many good players. We're trying to build something decent here and you've got to bring players in who can make a difference — I think he'll certainly do that.'
