For once the wind did not let Frostbites down as they welcomed Wells SC for the first leg of their 2013 team match.

Despite the cold, the very light north easterly perked up just enough to keep the boats moving. The Norfolk race was drastically shortened as the wind faded and the last boat came in 25 minutes after the winning two, Paul and Elise Carrington just pipping David and Kate Mackley.

Unusually, wind direction prompted a start downriver. Frostbites' game plan, as usual, was to whitewash the visitors prior to feasting them, but Wells, and in particular Chris Gibbs and Phillip Jones, did not learn the script, and they were able to secure third place in a shortened first race.

In the second race, which ran the full course, the hosts finished as planned, although Martin Read and Gibbs chased them hard all the way. However, much can happen at the second leg at Wells in the summer.

At Rollesby, the first multi-sail was won in the RS400 by John Symonds and Dave Houghton, while Derek Page and Gill Stevenson's Stratos made good speed after a late start, and Ian and Sharon Ayres led the symmetrics. Chris Toothill's Phantom could only manage sixth, but that was enough to beat the other five single-handers led by Nick Eastwood. The second race saw another RS400 win, this time chased all the way by Phil Highfield and Keith Sykes' RS500, with Eastwood best single-hander.

The afternoon race saw Ian Ayres and Peter Dearnley's Wayfarers, crewed respectively by Dennis Manning and Di Slatter, almost match racing with only Chris Codling's Laser challenging them. They swapped places several times before Ayres won, with Phil Highfield third.

Frustration ruled at Snowflakes, where a change of direction and trees nullified much of the little wind there was. Somehow Patrick Richardson and Julie Bennett crawled round the mark to fight the tide on the return and cross the line an hour after starting, while the rest bunched up and got back some time later.
