Twenty four Toppers, including nine visitors, enjoyed four testing races on Wroxham Broad last Saturday.

Emily King showed the progress she has made since last year by winning the first two races. Despite slipping to third and fifth in the last two, she just did enough to take the Topper Tankard on the tie-break from Joseph Mullan, of Priory SC, whose last race victory sufficed only to bring him level with points thanks to two second guns.

Two other NBYC members took the remaining guns, James Patience with a third and second, and Leah Tansley, who finished strongly with a first and third in the final races to edge her in front of Rollesby's Daniel Bull.

Many of these youngsters will be going 'on the circuit' this year and it will be interesting to watch their progress.

Their event co-incided with a Star weekend, admittedly with only four entries, sailing one race on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Adam Barker won the Saturday race from Danny Tyrrell and Jeff Amis, and Nick Eastwood repeated his success in Sunday's second race, but Tyrrell's two victories, including the last race, proved decisive in the tie-break on a windy day, and he won the Championship this year.

Frostbites started seven for their last Bramerton and back races, it would have been eight but for a spot of technical trouble for Sue Grief.

A brisk wind saw several place changes on the run downriver, but David and Kate Mackley soon took control to win for the third time, with Paul and Karen Armitage doing well to take second gun.

Meanwhile Pat Woodcock and Jan Hubbard, having embraced one of the dredging barges for no apparent reason eventually tore themselves away to rejoin the rest and then added insult to injury by steaming past into third spot through the Grove and taking third gun by a four-minute margin.

The return beat saw a similar pattern, with the Mackleys winning again, this time ahead of John and Caroline Ellis, with 'Pat and Bat' again third.

Coldham Hall SC started their season warming up for the regatta when eight boats raced to Buckenham and back.

Paul Parker and Gill Mott crossed the finishing line first in the club Wayfarer but were relegated to second on handicap by John Wells and Sally Wyatt, with Kevin Priest third in another Wayfarer and Geoff Pinder fourth in his Norfolk.

• Beccles Amateur Sailing Club hold their annual open day this Sunday.

Club commodore Glen Curtis, along with other officers and club members, will be on hand to have a chat in the clubhouse and a fleet of boats will be ready to take visitors young and old out on the Waveney for a trip and then come back ashore for some refreshments.

The event starts at 11am.
