A King's Lynn boxer has been enjoying a dream start to his career by sparring with London 2012 hero Anthony Ogogo ahead of his professional debut.

Charlie Garrod will step into the ring for the first time outside of the amateur circuit at Norwich's Epic Studios a week today. And the 22-year-old has been getting some expert preparation in ahead of his big night by training with Lowestoft's Olympic bronze medallist who has cruised to three victories since turning pro.

Garrod, who has gone toe-to-toe with the Golden Boy star at Kickstop Gym in Norwich, said: 'Graham (Everett, trainer) texted me one night before I was in Norwich to say I'd be sparring with Anthony. I was so excited.

'I couldn't wait to get down there. He's a lovely lad and the session was so good. I learned a lot because Anthony's so sharp and I've been working hard on my head movement. Being in there with him, showing me how he does it, was amazing.

'I only spoke to him a little bit as we got straight in there and started sparring. But hopefully he'll be down there again before I box and I can have the chance to talk to him and he can show and tell me a bit more.'

The light heavyweight – who still also trains under lifelong mentor Mel Payne at Heros Gym in Lynn – has also sparred with former British champion Sam Sexton among others in the build-up to his bout at next week's Shamrock Promotions event.
