There was a big British Cycling points haul for Bungay roadman Morris Bacon at the high category Roxwell Rouleur road race near Chelmsford – his third place being worth 45 points.
'A hard day out,' said Bacon's DAP teammate Harley Matthews who got one more point for his sixth place in Essex than for his outright win at Diss last week.
An early break of 10 riders built up a big lead – and from this John Mulvey (Cambridge University CC) rode to a solo win. The rest were caught with five miles remaining and in the ensuing sprint another Norfolk rider, Kieran Jarvis, took ninth overall.
Top time trial in the region was the Orwell Velo event based at Debenham. Traffic lights on the intended course forced a late change to a 10-mile event on the nearby Crowfield circuit. Winner Ross Fawcett (Pedal Power) duly revised Lloyd Chapman's already very tight course record. Fawcett set a new figure of 21:04 for the varied, and multi-cornered course coded B10/32. Next came Andy Proffitt (Ipswich BC, 21:47), and two former winners of this Renny Stirling Memorial event - Stuart Fairweather (VeloVelocity, 22:16) and Leon West (CC Sudbury, 22:45).
Mathilde Pauls (Sigma Sport), second in the Diss Road Race last week, was fastest woman in 24:30.
On Sunday Norwich was alive with cyclists here for the Round Norfolk 100.
For any who are thinking of moving on towards club-based cycle-sport, a good first step is checking out club websites. For lists of local clubs try www.britishcycling.org.uk/clubs or, alternatively, www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/find-clubs - East District.
Many of these CTT clubs run ten mile evening time trials at this time of year and these are a starting point for many. You don't have to be quick – I recorded 37:41 in a Diss CC 10 recently.
Lower category roadmen and women contested the Abberton Road Race near Colchester where the field was split by a crash on the widest, straightest part of the course – the new road past the extended reservoir.
Winner was Gavin Carter (Stowmarket & District CC), top Norfolk rider was Charlie Jones (DAP CC) who was eighth.
