King's Lynn Town could lose the services of George Thomson after Chester activated a clause in the midfielder's contract.

The 22-year-old joined the Linnets from Histon in October 2012 and has impressed that much that he signed a deal to keep him at The Walks until the end of next season.

However, Gary Setchell admits he's almost powerless to prevent the classy operator from leaving Norfolk if he decides he wants to join the full-time Conference outfit.

Lynn's boss said: 'It's not for me to talk about what's written in George's contract. That's between George, me, and the football club. All I will say is that Chester have activated a clause in his contract.

'It's not just our players who have clauses in their contracts. Barcelona obviously activated one in Luis Suarez's. Of course I'd be disappointed to lose George but being full-time at a club that want to get into the Football League is going to be a massive lure for him.

'George isn't definitely leaving, and to his credit he's been totally honest and up front about it from the start, so we'll just have to see what happens.'

The manager's player and players' player of last term scored twice for Chester – like the Linnets a reformed club – during the first of his two trial games, on Saturday. He is likely to feature in the Blues' friendly at Upton tomorrow.

Thomson, a former Nottingham Forest Academy player, has played 83 times during his time with Setchell's side, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Setchell added: 'George said when he came to us two years ago that he wanted to use Lynn as a stepping stone to get back into full-time football. He's given us everything.

'I said back then if he does extremely well for us, which he has, especially last year, then he had a chance. I've helped him improve as a player and if he does go he'll leave with my blessing and of course I will wish him well. If he stays, I think it'll be a big year for him here.'

Thomson missed Lynn's second friendly of the summer on Saturday while he was trying to impress his potential new employers. The Walks outfit drew 1-1 at Deeping Rangers with Dan Quigley finding the net. The Linnets return to action tomorrow when they play their first home friendly of pre-season against Norwich City Under-21s.
