Lynn showed they have just the right blend of warrior spirit and quality to continue their success story.

Gary Setchell's back-to-back promoted troops went into Saturday's game against Buxton in the middle of their best run of the season. But by 5pm they had extended that spell with a display which surely raises expectations of a serious push for the play-offs.

The Evo-Stik Premier Division newcomers had targeted a top-half finish at the start of the term. Yet that was long before they embarked on a winning streak which has placed them firmly among a large pack of sides that are fighting for a top-five finish. And if it's a battle that is required then Setchell's soldiers will be fine going toe-to-toe with the league's heavyweights. During their fourth successive victory at the weekend, two players spilled blood for the cause.

First, fans' favourite Dan Quigley become his team's Terry Butcher following a nasty clash of heads with Derek Niven. Then, captain Ryan Clarke tried to carry on just as his claret-soaked team-mate had despite breaking his nose. The pair didn't last the 90 minutes but that's only because by then their team had the three points wrapped up.

Setchell took the duo off as the job had already been done thanks to a treble dose of quality and finese that owed nothing to bravery. Jack McGovern's sweet left-footed centre was glanced into the top corner expertly by Ewan Clarke to give the hosts a half-time advantage.

That header was followed up by George Thomson's emphatic drive to make it 2-0 early in the second period. A third goal followed just three minutes later when Andy Hall fed Jake Jones and he curled the ball home beautifully into the bottom corner with his weaker right foot.

Lynn's third goalscorer has this week rejoined the club on a permanent basis. If he continues to show the match-winning promise he did during his loan spell from Tamworth, and again on Saturday, Setchell has another player in his ranks who can win a game in an instant.

Add the likes of the 'new boy' to Thomson, Hall and the improving Jack McGovern, Lynn are clearly not lacking quality. And with Quigley and Ryan Clarke in their squad, the Linnets will never be short of men who put their body on the line – a fact recognised by the improved gate of 653 who rightly cheered their heroes off the Walks' battlefield at the end of their latest triumph.
