Norwich City are rivalling Rangers for the signing of Levski Sofia defender Jose Cordoba, according to reports in Bulgaria.

The 22-year-old Panama international is supposedly a target for the Canaries as they press ahead with their squad revamp led by sporting director Ben Knapper.

Bulgarian outlet Gong are reporting that Norwich are in the race to sign the left-sided central defender, with Cordoba favouring a move to the Championship over the Scottish Premiership despite agreeing a contract with Rangers.

The report adds that Norwich have made an offer similar to Rangers, reported to be around €3.2m, and that Cordoba's preference is a move to Carrow Road.

Norwich are in the market for defensive reinforcements having released central defensive duo Ben Gibson and Danny Batth. Cordoba, as a left-sided option, would seemingly fit the bill.

Cordoba wouldn't meet the requirements for a work permit, meaning City would have to use one of their exemption slots to bring the defender to England.

The Panamanian has made 25 league appearances in Bulgaria this season, as well as making six appearances in the Europa Conference League before Levski's exit at the hands of Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt at the qualifying stage.

Cordoba has made 10 international appearances for Panama and moved to Bulgaria in 2021, having played football in his home country for Independiente de La Chorrera before earning a move to Spain to Celta Vigo but failed to break through to their senior team.

A move to Bulgarian side Etar followed after a successful trial period, and his first season ended in relegation. An agreement to take him to Levski Sofia was agreed in September 2021, which was turned permanent in July 2022.

His performances in Bulgaria have impressed, and Norwich are expected to recruit in areas where they feel they can get value for money coupled with a quality threshold that translates well to the Championship.

Cordoba has been left out of Levski's team in recent weeks and was invited by Rangers to watch their game against Kilmarnock back in March. The defender has also been linked with Besiktas, Lille and Union Saint-Gilloise.

Norwich are expected to dramatically alter their squad this summer with Knapper keen to lower the average age of the squad.
