Former Norwich City boss Martin O'Neill has landed the top role at the League Managers Association after a vote by members to make him chairman.

The Northern Irishman is set to succeed Howard Wilkinson in the post this summer. The former Leeds United and Sunderland boss will step down after more than three decades in the post.

O'Neill's name was nominated and pushed forward by members, and he has won the backing of voters to become the new chairman of the LMA, working closely with the chief executive Richard Bevan to support those in the dugout throughout England's footballing pyramid.

He last managed five years ago at Nottingham Forest and has also coached Leicester City, Celtic, Aston Villa, Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland in a managerial career that has spanned four decades.

O'Neill managed Norwich in June 1995, replacing John Deehan in the post. He left in December of the same year after a disagreement with chairman Robert Chase over a failed transfer pursuit of Dean Windass.

That was something the 72-year-old admitted to holding regrets over in an exclusive Pink Un interview back in December 2022. He resigned from his Carrow Road post in order to take over at Leicester.

He also spent two spells at Norwich during his established playing career that included winning the European Cup with Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest side.

O'Neill expressed his delight and excitement about taking up his new position as well as paying tribute to the departing and long-serving Wilkinson.

“I am extremely proud to be voted the new LMA Chair by my fellow managers," O'Neill said upon his appointment as LMA chairman.

“I am succeeding Howard Wilkinson who has, for over 30 years, overseen the growth of the LMA and served its members with great distinction, dedication and passion.

“The support I have received from the LMA throughout my time as a manager has been hugely important to me and I am delighted to have the opportunity to give something back to the association.

“I very much look forward to working alongside [chief executive] Richard Bevan and the team.

“I would like to build on the work Howard has done so diligently and hopefully continue to support the current and next generation of LMA members.”
