Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl admitted only drastic measures salvaged a Championship point against Norwich City.

Röhl’s side were second best in a first half dominated by the Canaries, who led at the break 2-0 after goals from Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz.

But the German made mass substitutions at the interval, and changed the formation and style of play to spark a dramatic turnaround, with Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith punishing the visitors with two thumping late headers from corners.

The Owls remain in the bottom three but Röhl knows the value of a hard-earned point.

“At half-time I told them, ‘We cannot change the past, but we can change the future of the second half’,” he said. “From the start of the second half it was front-foot, it was nasty, second balls, direct football. We had to change three things at half-time – some players, the formation and the direction of our football.

"This is my job. My assistant coach said, ‘You are really brave to make four subs at the half-time and not many managers would do this’, but for me it was clear. I looked at my tactics board and made sub, sub, sub, sub. Now I am happy with a point, not happy with the first half.

“Don’t forget how strong Norwich City is. They played well with the ball. We found it difficult with our pressing. But I won’t bring individual players into this. It was just important we showed a reaction, and we showed that our bench is also important. We played better in the second half. The stadium was behind us.

"We created a great energy and that showed what we need in our situation. But it had to be all or nothing. James Beadle made a big save for us in the second half, when if it goes 3-0, it is done.

“If we are over the (relegation) line after the last matchday then we will all take this. We come back, we come back and in this game we came back from 2-0 down. We showed we can do this against a strong Norwich.”
