David Wagner was left frustrated by a lack of killer edge as Norwich City squandered a two-nil lead to draw with struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz’s first-half strikes saw the Canaries race into the interval in full control of the contest, but Wednesday boss Danny Rohl made a quadruple substitution and changed approach to alter the contest in his team’s favour.

Two late corners were headed in by Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith cost City two points that would have proven invaluable to their play-off charge.

Wagner reflected with pride as to how his players performed at Hillsborough – but was left ruing a lack of ruthlessness in the defining moments.

“If we speak about the result, yes (I am frustrated). But if we speak about the performance, how the guys played, how focused they were from the first second, how they defended, how they competed in the second half against a team that started to play very direct – they have done everything super good and super well.

“We looked sharp, everything was there in and out of ball possession, but we didn’t kill the game. We were not ruthless in the opponent's box with the clear-cut chances that we had, and we had a lot,” he said.

“This is what decided this game and is why we have not won it. This is frustrating, you play so well in the first half against a team that wanted to play and press, but we found the solutions.

“If you don’t use the opportunities, then a set piece can always happen. It will not affect anything if you use your chances. The players have shown commitment, and this was good.”

Gabriel Sara and Jack Stacey missed gilt-edged chances in the second period, with a flurry of opportunities to score the killer third goal going begging in the first period.

“We can kill it in the first half or the second half. We haven’t done it. This is what hurts, and this is the truth,” Wagner said.

“It’s a point away from home but we were able to collect three and we haven’t done it because we haven’t killed it. When a team is so direct with set pieces, something can always happen. This is the story. This is what we have accept.”
