A conversation or two with Norwich City’s senior players was enough to convince David Wagner there will be no Ipswich derby hangover at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Canaries produced a superb 1-0 home win in a febrile Carrow Road atmosphere over their bitter rivals, that Wagner himself upgraded to one of the best he had experienced in his coaching career when he previewed the Owls' test at Colney.

But the German insists there will be no problem bringing his players back to earth at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

“I'm super confident about this game,” said Wagner, who cut a relaxed figure before City's team bus headed north late on Monday afternoon. “The reason is on Sunday morning I went into the canteen (at the training ground) for breakfast and I spoke with two senior pros, independent from each other, and everybody said it was great, we loved it, but now on Tuesday we have to back this up to make this victory really count against Ipswich.

“This was exactly the mindset which I expect from us, I love and I have myself. To hear this from my players, maybe they said that because I am the manager, [laughing], but this gives me at least the emotion that I am really looking forward to this game.”

The City chief indicated on Monday it will be the same squad on display that sunk Ipswich. Jon Rowe has returned to team training after his hamstring injury, but is not under consideration.

Wagner's biggest challenge is to harness the very best from City’s impressive derby display, on a highly-charged day of emotion at Carrow Road, to try and scale the same performance heights.

“This is the challenge for everyone at this stage of the season, but for us it's a very big one,” he said. “You've seen our team sheet in the last weeks. We have a very, very small squad, and we are still missing a lot of players.

"In the winter window the decision was made that we have to go with a very small squad into the rest of the season. Now we deal with the situation, and how the players dealt with it so far is outstanding.

“But it means, obviously, it makes it a little bit more difficult for the ones who have the challenges we have. We take them, we accept them, and we try everything to make sure everyone is as fresh as possible and stays healthy.

“It's a long season. Now we face matchday 42. We had a lot of cup games as well, and we are lucky enough to be at this stage of the season where we have something to play for. But that means the games start to even get bigger from the outside.

"At the end of the day, it's the same three points in this game that were on offer in matchday three. It is just that there are not many games left or many points to collect.

“This means we have to make sure we get the balance right. We recover well and prepare well, and make sure we get the freshness into the legs if we can.”

Wagner revealed nearly 2,000 away fans will be in attendance in Yorkshire, but they will have to go some to match the intensity of Saturday's home crowd.

"Outstanding. And it was not because of the away (Ipswich) supporters, to be fair. This was not the reason," he said. "This is what excites me to look forward, because they were more or less the same people in the stadium who will be in the stadium when we face Bristol in the next home game.

"If it's because of your team, which plays there, and because we all would like to achieve something, then let's produce it again. You have seen what kind of strong influence it has on your team - which you love with everything you have.

"It makes absolute sense to produce it again. Now we have two very important away games, where we know we have to collect points and wins as well away from home, if we want to reach our target. I think this will be the case, and the first opportunity is at Hillsborough."
