Sam McCallum's bid for a new Norwich City contract is acting as an added incentive in their push for the Championship play-offs.

The left-back is one of seven City players out of contract this summer and has made little secret of his desire to remain at Carrow Road.

McCallum has been handed an opportunity to stake his claim in the side after Dimitris Giannoulis' hamstring injury that will likely leave him sidelined until the end of April.

Since returning from a productive loan spell at QPR, McCallum has tussled with the Greek international for a starting spot and largely fallen behind him in the pecking order. Giannoulis is also out of contract at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old's focus is primarily on City's push for a top-six finish, but he knows that this could be his final chance to stake a claim for a new deal.

"There's been talks but we've not agreed anything yet," McCallum said after City's win over Plymouth.

"There are always contracts to play for, and I'm coming to the end of mine. It's obviously there, but we have seven games left, so the focus is probably not on the contract at the moment. The focus is just on getting into the play-offs.

"I've got this run of games coming now, and I've had the Stoke game, and I feel like I can show what I've got.

"It's a shame that Dimi (Giannoulis) is out now because we've got a lot of games coming up and we need all the players that we can get.

"Personally, I just have to take one game at a time and kick on from there."

Norwich had to show patience to overcome Plymouth at Carrow Road to continue their progress and move four points clear of nearest play-off chasing contenders Coventry in the table.

McCallum believes that patience and the belief that they had enough quality to come from behind fuelled their comeback against the struggling Pilgrims.

"We got three points in the end, but we had to dig in and put in the hard work to get them," McCallum said.

"It was a frustrating one in the first half because we were putting plenty of balls in the box but we just couldn't find the chances and then weren't that clinical.

"In the end, we knew we would get the chances and with Sarge and Barnesy up top, we know we are going to get a goal. With the players we have in the middle, we know we know we can create chances for them."

Norwich now start a daunting and pivotal week in their top-six push, with a trip to faltering Leicester before the small matter of an East Anglian derby against Ipswich. They hope to continue their impressive run of Championship form.

McCallum faces the task of nullifying highly-rated winger Abdul Fatawu as City bid to prolong their recent frustrations. The Foxes have suffered four defeats in their last six Championship matches.

Since the start of the year, Norwich have taken more points than Leicester - who have fallen behind Daniel Farke's Leeds United and Ipswich in the promotion race, although they do have a game in hand.

Despite their current form, McCallum isn't going to take them lightly but knows Norwich have enough ability and momentum to record three points at the King Power Stadium.

"With the Championship, momentum is a big thing. We have got that at the moment and, going into Monday, we have every chance of beating them," McCallum said.

"(Their form) has definitely dropped off a bit, but we cannot be complacent about that. We have to take the game as it comes and hopefully beat them.

"Ipswich coming up as well - the boys and the staff are focusing on the Leicester game. Once we have got that out of the way then we will focus on that Ipswich game.

"Morale in the changing room is very high, and we're feeling positive. We feel like we can kick on and secure our spot in the play-offs."
