King's Lynn Town 2 Rushall Olympic 1

Have King’s Lynn Town unearthed a new goal-scoring hero?

Jonny Margetts's neatly-taken brace which settled the issue made it eight games unbeaten for Lynn, and a move up the table to the nose-bleed territory otherwise known as 18th position in the National League North.

There’s light between Lynn and the relegation zone and, for once, they have games in hand on most of their closest rivals.

It wasn’t all down to Margetts... just most of it. Cameron Hargreaves was immense in midfield, Ross Barrows excellent on his second home Linnets debut. But it was the 30-year-old former league player who was in the thick of everything.

As Lynn looked to cancel out Rushall’s early opener, he tangled with Rico Browne in the area. Lynn wanted a penalty, the ref ignored the pleas – and Browne said after the game he definitely got the ball. As you do.

Soon after, referee Richard Holmes could easily have meted out more punishment than a yellow card for a Margetts elbow on Simeon Maye. He didn’t – probably the only saving grace from his own afternoon’s work.

Margetts levelled on the stroke of half-time, benefiting from excellent work from Barrows, and then grabbed the winner after equally good stuff from Dylan Crowe, this after the scorer had teed up first Hargreaves and then sub Tommy Hughes for chances that could have sealed the issue earlier.

For a team that lost a 20-goal striker in Gold Omotayo last summer, who have enjoyed the scoring prowess of Adam Marriott and Michael Gash in recent years, Margetts is a bonus, acquired midway through a season which started with a ‘plan’ for midfielders to chip in more to make up for the absence of a genuine hitman.

Margetts just looks such a natural who makes it all seem easy.

“Well, the best goal scorers do,” said Lynn boss Adam Lakeland. “How many people there have a rush of blood to the head, smash it over the bar or don't connect properly? He’s just passed it into the goal with pace and quality.

“But, in the second half especially, I thought his all-round play was outstanding. The game started to open up, he made clever runs, got hold of the ball, linked it up, brought some of the others into play and obviously his two goals just topped off a good performance by him.

“He just keeps going and I think he sensed in that game there second half as it's opening up, you could just see his sense was he was going to get another chance. And if he gets a chance, he generally takes it, as we've seen in in the short space of time that he's been with us.

“It’s a penalty the first half for me. Why would he go down? And the lad’s certainly not clearly taken the ball.

“The challenge I think is just an honest attempt to go and win the ball. I think naturally when you're going up for headers you need your arms as leverage. I think it looked probably worse and more aggressive than it was. A yellow card I thought was probably one of the ones that he (the referee) did get right.”

If Margetts does turn out to be a new hero for the blue and gold faithful, then the returning favourite Ross Barrows looked like he’d never been away. Barrows is here for a month from Scunthorpe, to replace Kian Ronan who is away on international duty with Gibraltar. He may have a fight on his hands when he returns.

“I've been nothing but impressed with him (Barrows) as a lad,” said Lakeland. “Obviously you speak to the lads who know him from his previous spell here, speak to the chairman and just to other people generally around the club, and you see how popular he is with the supporters.

“But working with him day-to-day he is just a good, honest lad, got a bit of character, always got a smile on his face in and around the training ground and I think we've seen today he's fully committed to the club.

"That’s why it was a no-brainer for us bringing him here, because I think Kian's been performing a hell of a lot better in the last couple of months, playing with more confidence., playing with probably more understanding of what I want from a player in that role, but it was so important with him obviously going away with Gibraltar that we brought somebody in who had a bit of experience, had qualities and who was going to be committed to our current situation and Ross just ticked all the boxes.

"I think probably he’ll be better for having another 90 minutes in him there because he's not played too much football recently at Scunthorpe, but he seems to be enjoying himself and if you can keep performing like that then that's good.”
