Angus Gunn is one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship, and David Wagner admitted there is an added level of security when the Scottish international is between the sticks.

Norwich City's first-choice shot-stopper has been pivotal to their Championship victories in recent weeks with crucial interventions that have helped them over the line in matches over play-off chasing rivals.

Saves to deny Haji Wright and then Kasey Palmer at key moments in their 2-1 win over Coventry last weekend were key to City recording a precious three points in their push for the top six.

Wagner made Gunn his favoured keeper within weeks of becoming City's head coach and has been rewarded with improved performances from the 28-year-old, who has added a consistency to his game.

Whilst much has been made of the Canaries' attacking vigour through Jon Rowe and Borja Sainz, Gunn has been as important to their cause this season.

"I think Gunny, and goalkeepers in general, get a lot of praise when they keep a clean sheet; this is the nature of the game," Wagner said at his pre-match press call.

"But nobody should underestimate that for the win over Coventry, he played a crucial part in it with these two saves. They came at big moments. This is what he has done now very consistently as well, which is great.

"To be fair, when George (Long) has been used in the cup games, he has shown unbelievably good performances.

"Big credit to Clem (Paul Clements, goalkeeping coach) and the goalkeeping department for this. What they do in training, I can see it live, is top class.

"Gunny is desperate, like everyone, to push for the last 16 games in a team where you can feel they have the desire and hunger to keep doing this."

For Wagner, Gunn is an ideal fit for his desired style of play due to his proactivity and ability to read situations during matches.

Combine that with his shot-stopping elements, and the City boss ranks him as one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship.

"In my point of view, he is the best if you play with a high line and to play like a sweeper," Wagner said. "He has very good timing and a good understanding to do this.

"It gives us all a good feeling when he is between the sticks. Hopefully he can show a good performance on Saturday because we will need him again."
