Ashley Barnes has called on Norwich City's squad to be accountable for their collapse against Watford.

It was the same old story for the Canaries as soft goals saw them squander a two-nil lead to eventually be beaten 3-2 at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night.

The defeat has squashed the positivity that emerged from their consecutive victories over Cardiff and QPR - raising questions once again about the character of the side and its direction of travel under head coach David Wagner.

1,300 supporters booed City's players as they headed to applaud them post-match and Barnes, whilst calling for togetherness, accepts the squad need to shoulder more responsibility for their poor performances.

"We capitulated," he admitted. "We have got to hold our hands up. The fans are right to be annoyed or disheartened, but we are as well. It's not good enough, and we have to go back to basics on Sunday.

"We need everyone. I know the fans are frustrated, but we need everyone together. Today was not a nice feeling.

"I'm sure a lot of fingers will get pointed at myself, but I'm big enough and ugly enough to take it on the chin. We all need to be accountable for the goals that we're conceding.

"It's not a lack of effort. It's the detail and the manner we are going about it. It's like the same goals all the time. It's like 'come on now, grab your mate and come together'. We will dust ourselves again and go again."

Wagner was once again at the heart of fans' frustrations during the game and after the final whistle - with chants calling for him to be dismissed audible again.

Despite the criticism the City boss is receiving at present, Barnes believes it should be the players copping the flak for another underpar display in a season of few redeeming features to date.

"Of course. I feel sorry for him because you want to win for him. The hunger for him to succeed is there," Barnes said.

"He gets a lot of criticism, but it's not him, it's us. It's us making stupid mistakes like the goals we are conceding. It's just basics and we need to get it right as soon as possible."
