As Norwich City emerged for the second half at the Cardiff City Stadium, Kellen Fisher was coming to terms with his first real setback since moving to Norfolk.

The 19-year-old full-back had been substituted at half-time after a difficult 45 minutes, and a rapid turnaround that meant the Canaries were 2-1 behind in a crucial game for David Wagner’s future.

Fisher was under a head coach with a major preference for experience, vying for game time against a 27-year-old billed by many as City’s best summer signing. He couldn’t have been blamed for feeling like things were crashing down around him.

The negative feeling that accompanied that performance served to highlight how well things have gone for the Bromley academy graduate. This is a man who was brought to Carrow Road to compete in the development squad, now disappointed to be substituted in a Championship away game.

His boss believes that will have no impact on his defender, however, and promises that he’ll get his chance to impress again.

“Kellen produced some good performances in the games before, when they came on or when they started. This was not as good, but it happens, they are human. Take it on the chin.

“We know and he knows that we really trust and believe in him. He will get his opportunities in the future, 100 per cent.”

Fisher does have one team-mate who will know exactly how he’s feeling, having been dropped from the starting line-up at the same time as him.

“I get on well with Jaden Warner,” he says. “I think we’re in the same sort of position at the moment, in between the under-21s and the first team.

“Making his debut at Fulham, it was a great feeling playing alongside one of your best pals at the club. He did really well on that day.”

That trip to Craven Cottage was one in a series of rapid milestones for Fisher, who is still revelling in the fact he’s even at a club of City’s size.

“It was a very proud moment for me and my family,” he told the club’s official matchday programme of his Carrow Road switch. “Everyone knows Norwich; it is such a big club. You’re going to be slightly nervous signing for a club that’s three leagues above and it was a bit surreal.

“When I joined the first conversation I had with the boss was that I was going to spend the first two weeks with the first team, which I think helped me so much to be introduced to the boys from an early stage.

“I was supposed to be with the under-21s when I joined, but he made me feel welcome. It was a great period for me to settle in with the first team over pre-season to help me adapt and get used to the level of football and the way the boss wants us to play.”

Things progressed quickly from there and he now finds himself a fully-fledged first-team member.

“I think it really helped me playing in games in Germany and Austria, which was my first pre-season tour with a team and an unbelievable feeling,” he recalled. “Playing games away from England with the lads was a great period for me to have to settle down.

“Over time the boss would speak to me and say I’m doing well. I think it was after the Austria trip that he sat me down and said he was impressed by me and that I’m going to move into the first-team changing room and stay with them for the season.

“It was a great feeling, and I was very excited for what was to come.”

There’s no intent on Fisher’s part to slow down now, however. He believes he has the best facilities available to take his game further, as he targets a more regular starting berth under Wagner.

“I feel like my game’s come along quite a bit since joining Norwich,” he said. “Training every day at a better level is noticeable.

“I feel like physically obviously I have room to improve and I’ve been working harder in the gym, but I think that will come over time.

“The intensity is so much higher and obviously the quality, everyone’s first touch is on point. You can’t let your foot off the gas.

“I fell in love with the facilities straight away; it is at a Premier League level. I feel like the facilities at Norwich will help any player; the gym, the pitches, the SoccerBot. There’s everything there to improve as a player and if you put your mind to it then the hard work will show on the pitch.”
