Kenny McLean is thriving in a new midfield role - but is targeting further improvement under David Wagner.

The Scot has been deployed in a deeper, quarterback style role since the German's arrival at Norwich and has impressed with his range of passing, energy and tactical understanding.

That midfield is viewed by City's new head coach as being pivotal to the functioning of his desired set-up at Carrow Road.

McLean, who was named as the club's Player of the Month on Wednesday, has received plenty of plaudits for his performances against Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End but believes there is more to come as he continues to get familiar with the role.

“I’m enjoying it. I hope it shows in my performances and I’ll keep trying to improve on it because there are things that this manager wants me to do that maybe I haven’t done in the past, it’s just about adapting to that and trying to get as good at that as possible.

"I feel comfortable doing it. We are trying to control the game with the ball so it’s something we will keep building on and getting better at," McLean said.

“I think you can probably see them on the pitch. You guys pointed it out, dropping in between the centre halves and trying to get the game and build up in a three. The centre backs can go wide or I go wide at times.

"It just gives us and other people better angles. The movement on the back of that is what we’re working hard on. When that becomes more fluid, you will see it more I am sure."

McLean played a crucial role in the Canaries' crucial 4-0 victory over Preston on Saturday but says Norwich must maintain their standards in the weeks ahead.

“You’re always proving yourself. Because we’ve done well in the past, it doesn’t always mean that it is going to happen again," the Scottish international said.

"It’s down to us to go and earn the right to be in a position that we want to be in the league. At the moment we aren’t there.

"There’s still a lot of hard work ahead. It’s about trying to build some momentum and get a run together which is going to be tough, but we are more than up to it.

“We’ve been trying to set the standards everyday in training because you train the way you play. Last week I thought we did things pretty well but the result was poor. We’ve taken a step in the right direction and we want to see more progress."
