Wymondham failed to hold on to their unbeaten home run, losing to South Woodham Ferrers on Saturday.

The difference was largely down to Woodham's ability to counter attack and finish, while Wymondham failed to stick to their game plan, kicking possession away far too often.

Wymondham had a torrid first half, despite taking the lead with a James Wyatt penalty and clearly holding the upper hand up front. Unfortunately the inability to keep the game tight handed the half to Woodham who scored three terrific tries on the counter attack - first Leon Gateson, followed by Joe Dukelow and then "Digger" Duggan, all converted by Nick Kilbey.

An injury early on to skipper Andrew Nelson didn't help but Kirk Vincent stepped in to produce another inspired performance, scoring two tries.

Wymondham's indiscipline though was a cause for concern - luckily Kilbey failed to convert four simple penalty chances. Additonally, had Ian Harris and Stephen Simms not made try saving tackles, the half time score could have been approaching 50.

If Wymondham had failed to play to their game plan in the first half, they certainly tried to do so in the second and from a catch and drive Kirk Vincent crashed over, with Wyatt converting.

From the restart, Woodham capitalised on more Wymondham errors, creating a three-on-one overlap that gave Dave Bull the easiest of scores, once again converted by Kilbey. Try as they might Wymondham couldn't convert their own chances until a great back-row move between Mike Rout and Chris Brown that saw Brown score in the corner, but Wyatt failed to convert.

Once again it was a case of two steps forward and three backwards because from the restart Gateson delivered a killer blow, bursting through to score his second with Kilbey converting.

Wymondham had the final say as Vincent scored his third try in two weeks, but it was not enough to beat a classy Woodham side.

With just four fixtures remaining, Wymondham are two points away from improving on last season's effort but they still need to be cautious because six sides are now battling to avoid the third relegation slot with Dagenham and Billericay favourites for the other two.
