Some of the names on the King's Lynn team sheet may have been unfamiliar but the Linnets still cruised past Irchester in the United Counties League Cup.

Lynn completed their third cup win in seven days which has seen them progress to the FA Vase quarter-finals, a Norfolk Senior Cup final and a place in the last eight of the league's cup competition.

Patrick Bexfield, one of only a few regular first-teamers on display, got an outstanding brace but the name on most lips was that of Adam Reeve, 17, who got two goals – one a stunning volley – on his first-team debut.

'I am really pleased for Neil Fryatt and Jonathan Hawes today,' said first-team boss Gary Setchell. 'This is a great testament to all of the hard work that they put into the reserve team at this club. In the past far too much focus has been put into the first team, and reserve players have not been given a chance to show what they can do. We have a small squad here and youngsters like Adam, Tom {Barnes} and Spits {James Spittlehouse} will continue to get a chance in the first- team squad in the future.

'Adam has played very well today. Had Jamie Thurlbourne scored his first goal today everyone would have been raving about it for weeks. He has pace and unsettles opponents and a lot of potential. It was a shame that Tom had to come off because he was showing some nice touches.

'We said that we would make some changes today and we will do the same again for the quarter final at St Neots. I have no worries about putting any of these lads in for that game. The reserve coaches are always telling me that these boys are ready and they have proved it today'

Lynn controlled the game from the off and scored when Robbie Harris picked out Barnes whose cross found Reeve who crashed the ball on the volley past Tom Cross for a stunning opener. Jamie Alsop had Cross scrambling from a free-kick which the keeper palmed away. From the corner Barnes was twice denied by Cross.

That was the impressive Barnes' last contribution as a knock to the ankle saw him replaced by Thurlbourne. The Romans counted briefly but Shaun Goodhall fired wide. Bexfield crashed home a spectacular second from fully 25 yards following a determined run.

Bexfield robbed an Irchester defender and picked out Harris who teased the defence before selecting Reeve whose cool finish belied his tender years.

Reeve linked with another youngster Luis Duarte whose superb low cross should have been buried by any on- rushing forward. Gary Stohrer stabbed home a consolation but Bexfield hammered in just before the end to put the gloss on another good day at the office for the Linnets, who return to league action at Yaxley on Tuesday.
