Dereham Ladies won the prestigious Gillieson Cup when they defeated Costessey Park 2-1 in the final at Thetford.

This was the club's second success in the inter-club foursomes knockout, having previously won the coveted trophy in 1983.

All three matches were decided by comfortable margins and first blood in the final went to Costessey, when Anne Sibley and Jill Daly closed out their opposition on the 15th.

But before long the pendulum has swung in Dereham's direction with their remaining pairs beating their rivals on the 13th and 15th holes.

Dereham had a bye in the first round of the competition and reached the final by beating Richmond Park 3-0, Royal Cromer away 2-1 and Thetford 2-1.

Costessey Park defeated Mundesley 3-0, Dunston Hall 2-1, Royal Norwich 2-1 and Middleton Hall away 2-1.

Results: Dereham names first: Helen Burrage, Pam Kaye (rec 1) lost to Anne Sibley, Jill Daly 5&3; Catherine Newey, Maria Fox (rec 2) beat Sue Page, Clare Anderson 5&3; Carole Harrisson, Elizabeth Bench (rec 1) beat Sue Boast, Sheila Glenn 6&5.

• The Young Cup – for pairs of ladies and girls from the same club – was won in a closely-contested final by the mother and daughter partnership of Tracey and Amelia Williamson of Royal Cromer. They took the honours at Bawburgh when they beat Eaton's Sally Benton and junior Ellen Astbury Dennis 2 and 1.

The Williamsons, who gave eight shots, had the upper hand over the opening holes and were four up after eight. But the Eaton pair clawed back the deficit and the match was all square after the 12th.

However, the Williamsons took the advantage again when they won the 13th and 14th and, although they lost the 15th, they secured the title on the 17th.

This is a first county title for Amelia, who could well be following in her mother's footsteps.

Tracey is a multiple winner of the Norfolk ladies' championship and of regional titles.

Both pairs, who were refereed by Beryl Nash of Caldecott Hall, were well supported by spectators.

This year's competition originally attracted 15 pairs and for some of the girls it was their first experience of competitive, foursome matchplay and playing on other courses.

The range of handicaps was from 36 to 12.

Eaton's Karen Young, the former county champion who gave the trophy to the county, remarked: ' I hope that all girls with a CONGU handicap will find a lady at their club to partner up with and enter next year. Entry is free!'
