Harleston Magpies overcame determined opponents and a tricky surface to retain top spot in the Women's East Conference.

A pitch covered in mud after heavy overnight rain made for a match full of mistakes from both sides. It was difficult for defenders to time tackles and keep their footing under such conditions and Chelmsford suffered further problems with two players getting injured.

The Magpies forwards, on the other hand, were having a field day. Angie Wheelhouse continued her good form from last week with a well taken opener.

Despite a Chelmsford equaliser, Magpies continued to create plenty of chances and Emma Lee-Smith went close with several short corners before Emily Wilford scored from a corner.

Debbie Francis extended the lead with a rebound from another corner. Chelmsford hit back following more defensive errors and in an exciting finish both teams scored again, Wilford scoring the goal of the day with a run dribble and powerful strike from the top of the D.

Magpies deserved the victory, which maintained their unbeaten record, and kept them a point clear of Ipswich. Captain and player of the match Charlotte Harrison led by example in difficult conditions.
