Gary Setchell has boosted King's Lynn Town's firepower this morning by signing highly-rated Histon striker Shane Tolley.

The Linnets boss has openly admired the talents of the 27-year-old - who only joined the Blue Square North club last month - since he dazzled against Lynn for St Neots Town during both club's days in the United Counties Premier Division.

However, he finally secured Tolley's signature today as the fall out at financially-troubled Histon, who play two levels above Lynn, continues.

Setchell said: 'People know about him because he's been a thorn in our side - certainly the first year I was here. I know Stefan Moore got a lot of the headlines but I think Shane was the one who hurt us the three times we played them.

'I've seen him a couple of times since he's been at a higher league and he's a player that I really, really like. He's a real clever footballer and his goals ratio and his ability to finish is second to none.

'Even this season with injury he still scored 20-odd for Spalding in the short time he was there and he went to Histon, played a higher level, and scored there. This will be a perfect platform for him to play his football.

'You can't have too many good players. We're trying to build something decent here and you've got to bring players in who can make a difference - I think he'll certainly do that.'

The frontman, nicknamed Custard, will make his debut for Setchell's men this afternoon against Hucknall Town.

Tolley was a youngster at Peterborough United - where he won junior caps for England - before joining Latvian side FK Riga.

On his return to England, the striker played for Truro before eventually signing for St Neots in 2010. There, under Dennis Greene, he bagged 56 league goals in two seasons to help the Saints' clinch back-to-back league titles.

He left this summer to join big-spending UCL side Spalding and found the net 20 times before leaving to link up with Greene again - this time at Step Two Histon. The Stutes' boss and Tolley - who scored one goal during his brief spell at the Glassworld Stadium - are now no longer at the club.

Lynn's new signing said: 'Things weren't looking too great at Histon so Setch got hold of me and said 'do you fancy coming to Lynn?'. Obviously, with the way things are there, and the size of Lynn as a club, it was a no-brainer really.

'Debuts are interesting. As a striker you would love to score on your debut and get off the mark straight away. Hopefully, if we can win later today, and I can score, then I'll be over the moon.'
