Diss continue to find the first win of the league season just beyond their reach. This was an improved performance overall and shows that the side are developing in all the key areas. But yet again careless errors and an inability to turn pressure into points proved costly.

An enthusiastic and knowledgeable crowd saw Colchester establish dominance early on and score a converted try within the first 10 minutes. Colchester looked a fit and well drilled unit and repeatedly put the Diss side under pressure. But the hosts gradually began to assert themselves and following excellent approach work from both the forwards and backs John Laurie scored out on the right hand side. Jack Peacock was not successful with the conversion.

Just before half-time Diss were penalised at a defensive ruck and Colchester were able to reach half-time 10-5 in the lead.

The second half followed a very similar pattern to the first. Colchester were more on the front foot but the Diss defence stood up well and the game could have gone either way with 20 minutes to go. Following a heavy tackle in the first half Diss were certainly missing the attacking acumen of Warren Wilby in the centre and Colchester stretched their lead with a penalty.

With time running out, Diss now began to secure more possession on the front foot with John Laurie, Josh Monk and Scott Deacon all beginning to make telling and aggressive runs. Diss were awarded a penalty within distance of the posts but elected to run the ball and lost possession. Eventually a penalty was awarded closer to the Colchester line and James Wyatt stepped up to score his first points for the first XV.

Diss continued to attack but were unable to score the converted try they needed to win the game.

But they certainly played with more vigour this week and stepped up to the mark, achieving a bonus point that was well deserved.
